I came across this question in a forum and I remembered also being asked the same thing a couple of times by friends who wanted to get into photography.

Assuming you are a total noob in photography, my advice (which is the same advice given to me by angrylittleboy) is to go to a camera store, grab a cam that appeals to you and if it feels good in your hands, go buy it.

Ok, you're probably thinking that it should be a bit more complicated than that. There are other things to consider like ISO performance, frames-per-sec, battery life, flash sync speed, etc, etc.. right? That's true if you're someone whose looking for something to fit a particular need. If not, then any camera regardless of the brand will suit you just fine.
